OpenAI Makes ChatGPT Search Accessible to All

OpenAI is enhancing the accessibility of its AI search engine, ChatGPT Search. Users no longer need an OpenAI account to utilize the platform.

As announced by OpenAI on Wednesday, ChatGPT Search no longer necessitates logging in. This feature enables ChatGPT to deliver responses based on web-sourced information, accompanied by a list of sources consulted for formulating the answer.

Initially introduced in October for paid ChatGPT subscribers, the search engine was later made available to the public in December. By removing the account requirement, ChatGPT Search is positioned to compete directly with established search engines such as Google and Bing.

Similarly, the AI "answer" engine Perplexity allows account-free web searches and recently integrated a feature that directly sources hotel information and ratings from TripAdvisor. A recent update to ChatGPT Search enhances its resemblance to traditional search engines, allowing users to view maps, images of local attractions, and brief descriptions for each result.

OpenAI communicated the change through a post on X, stating, "ChatGPT search is now available to everyone on chatgpt.com. No sign-up required." This increased accessibility simplifies the use of ChatGPT Search, intensifying the pressure on Google's long-standing dominance in online search. Other search-focused AI chatbots, like Perplexity, might also be impacted by ChatGPT Search's enhanced accessibility.

The launch of ChatGPT Search in October 2024, approximately two years after the release of the regular AI-powered chatbot, aimed to provide a conversational approach to online queries, eliminating the need for extensive searches.

A key distinction between ChatGPT and ChatGPT Search lies in their data sources. ChatGPT operates on a vast dataset limited to a specific cutoff date, lacking access to real-time information. In contrast, ChatGPT Search accesses dynamic, real-time data.

ChatGPT excels in tasks like creative writing, brainstorming, and general knowledge inquiries that do not require the most up-to-date information. Conversely, ChatGPT Search proves valuable for obtaining the latest news, weather updates, stock prices, and other time-sensitive information.

Another notable difference is ChatGPT Search's practice of citing its sources, including links, enabling users to explore specific pages for further information. This characteristic aligns it closely with one of its prominent competitors, Perplexity.

To use ChatGPT Search via the web interface, navigate to ChatGPT.com and click the "Search" button within the prompt box. Once selected, you can enter your prompt. The response will include small boxes indicating the sources' origins, allowing you to click and visit the respective pages.
